11月2～3日、島本町文化祭が開催されました。
島本国際交流協会は今年も出展！

姉妹都市関連のクイズスタンプラリーは、子どもたちにも大人気！
スタンプはすべて、協会メンバーの手作りです！

全ての絵をAIで作成した、オリジナルまんがもあり、姉妹都市のこれまでの歴史をわかりやすく伝えていると、好評でした。

とはいえ目玉は、今年来町したフランクフォート市長のコーナーでしょう。
つい先日、9月17日に来町されています。
直筆メッセージには多くの人が足を止めました。

さらに今年は、フランクフォート市の学校に送るクリスマスカードも募集。
子どもも大人も、たくさんの人がカードを書いてくれました。

集まった150枚以上のカードは、Second Street Schoolに送付します。
クリスマスには間に合うように届くはず。
向こうの子供たちが、喜んででくれるといいですね。

The Shimamoto Cultural Festival was held last week.
SCEAssoc joined again this year!

Our Sister City quiz and stamp rally were a big hit with the kids.
All the stamps were handmade by one of us!

We also presented an original manga illustrated with AI.
People loved how clearly it showed our Sister City’s story.

The highlight was a special corner about the Mayor of Frankfort,
who visited Shimamoto on September 17.
Many people stopped to read his handwritten message.

This year, we also collected Christmas cards to send to a school in Frankfort.
Both kids and adults wrote many heartfelt cards.

Over 150 cards will be sent to Second Street School, just in time for Christmas.

8月9日、今年初となる「学ぼう姉妹都市 in English」が開催されました。
昨年4回開催されたのに引き続き、二度目の試みです。

会場にはSCEAスタッフのほか、大学生のかえでちゃんも応援にかけつけ

下は５歳～上は中学生まで、総勢16人が参加してくれました。

会場では「姉妹都市のある州は？」などのクイズに盛り上がながら
（選択肢はナント、マクドナルド・ケンタッキー・ロッテリアの３つでした！）

姉妹都市・フランクフォートについて学びました。

みんなで「パプリカ」を歌いながら踊ったり、

英語のゲームもおこなわれて、年齢の差をものともせず、みんなで楽しみました。

最後には、がんばったみんなにご褒美まであり、子どもたちはみな満足そうでした。

また機会があれば、開催したいと思っています。

６月になりました。
水無瀬川のほとりの桑の木がたわわに実り、私の家に植えてあるユスラウメも実って、ささやかな初夏の風味を楽しむ季節です。
田んぼには水が張られ、田植えも終わるころ、水無瀬川には夏の風物詩が現れます。

ひとつはカジカガエル。
水笛を吹くような、美しい声で歌うこのカエルは、水のきれいな川にしか住まないそうです。

もうひとつが、ホタルです。
川面をふわりふわりと、輝く真珠が漂う様は幻想的で美しく、毎年この時期夕方になると町民はこぞって川辺にその景色を見に来ます。

島本が誇る、夏の景色です。

June has arrived.
The mulberry trees along the banks of the Minase River are heavy with fruit, and the Nanking cherries in my garden are ripening as well. It's the season to savor the quiet flavors of early summer.

The rice fields are now filled with water, and planting has just been completed. Around this time, the Minase River comes alive with signs of summer.

One of those signs is the Kajika frog. Known for its beautiful, flute-like song, this frog can only live in clean, clear water.

Another is the firefly. Their soft, glowing lights drift gently above the river’s surface like floating pearls, creating a magical and dreamlike scene.

Every year during this season, local residents gather along the riverbank in the evening to admire this fleeting beauty.

It’s one of the most beloved sights of summer in Shimamoto.

大阪で開催中の、EXPO 2025に行ってきました！
「未来への扉を開く万博」をテーマに、各国・各企業とも先端技術の紹介がされていました。
海外展示エリアを取り巻く大屋根リングは圧巻で、下を歩いても上に登って景色を楽しむのも楽しかったですよ。
目新しい技術を知るのも面白いですが、日頃触れる機会のない国々の文化や料理に触れられるのも、万博の醍醐味です。
個人的に、特に興味を惹かれたのが中東諸国。
特に、ナツメヤシの林をイメージしたアラブ首長国連邦のパビリオンはエキゾチックで、束の間アラビアンナイトな気分を味わいました。
民族衣装に身を包んだ素敵なパビリオンスタッフの皆さんや、ヨルダン館で飲んだデーツシェイクの味も、忘れられません。

飲食といえば他にも、昔読んだ本に出てきて以来憧れていたチェコのクネドリーキを食べたり、ビールを片手に口にした本場ドイツのブルストを使ったバーガーに齧りついたのも楽しい思い出！

今回訪れたパビリオンは、各国ともそれぞれSDGsへの取り組み方が様々なのが印象的でした。
「循環型経済」をテーマに掲げたドイツは、パビリオン自体を再利用可能な木材やリサイクル素材で構成。
かわいいマスコットキャラクターが日・英・独3ヶ国語で展示内容を説明してくれることもあり、とても人気でした。
ここは技術者としても注目の最新技術がたくさん展示されていましたよ。

コモンズC館では、戦時下にあるウクライナの展示も実施。
店舗を模した展示室内には、値札を模したバーコードがタグ付けされたオブジェクトがあり、スキャンするとそれぞれに紐づいたストーリーの動画が見られます。
民主主義や尊厳、自由が「NOT FOR SALE（お金では手に入らない）」ものであることを訴えてくる、印象的な展示でした。

興味深い展示がたくさんある博覧会です。

Wakayama Shrine’s annual festival was held on May 5th.
During the event, two portable shrines (mikoshi) were carried through the streets in a lively procession.
In addition to the regular-sized mikoshi, there was a smaller one for children, known as the Kodomo Mikoshi (Children’s Mikoshi).
A few decades ago, these children’s mikoshi were a common sight in many towns.
Although fewer children participate today due to changes in lifestyle, it is very special that this tradition is still preserved at Wakayama Shrine.

5月5日、若山神社にて毎年恒例の例大祭が今年も開催されました。
例大祭では通常サイズの神輿と、子供神輿の二基が町を練り歩きます。
ほんの数十年前までは、どこの街でもこの子供用神輿が見られたものでした。ライフスタイルの変化により、昔と比べ参加する子供の数は減ってしまいましたが、若山神社でこの伝統が守られているのは素晴らしいことです。

使っている写真はどれも、私たちが交流している現地の方から寄せられたものですが、被害の大きさが伝わってきて胸が痛みます。
洪水が、最中だけでなく後処理もとても大変なことは、日本に住む皆さんならご存知のことと思います。
被害がこれ以上広がらず、姉妹都市の皆さんが無事であることを願ってやみません。

Hello everyone! I was further south in Kentucky around Whitley County and happened to be near Cumberland Falls. I attended a wedding that overlooked the Kentucky River and captured a few photos and video! You can see in the first few that the fog hadn’t settled in. However in the last photos you can see where it slowly began coming in while the sun set.

From Frankfort to Cumberland Falls is around a two hour drive. It’s around 157 km or 98 miles. Give or take the traffic and weather.

先日、ケンタッキー州南部のホイットリー郡、カンバーランドの滝の近くに行く機会がありました。
ケンタッキー川を見渡せる場所で行われた結婚式に参加したのですが、その時の様子を共有しますね！

最初のうちは、霧がまだ立ち込めていなかったよですが、時が経って夕日が沈むにつれて少しずつ霧が立ち込めていく様子がわかるでしょうか。

フランクフォートからカンバーランド滝までは車でおよそ2時間、約157キロ（98マイル）の距離です。
交通状況や天候にもよりますが、機会があればぜひ訪れてみてください！

フランクフォートのSeconds Street Schoolから、７年生のみなさんが庭園を題材に書いた絵の写真が届きました！
盆栽や小川のせせらぎ、鯉の泳ぐ池や茶室、仏像に三重塔…子供たちがどんなことを想像して書いたのか考えると、笑みがこぼれます。
個人的には、最後から二枚目の旧美の狐っぽジバニャンっぽいのが気になる…！

Today was Thanksgiving in America, family's get together
for the Holiday and eat Large Dinner's and get to see family members they may not often get to see.
We eat lots of good Southern Foods like Turkey, Ham,Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing, Macaroni & Cheese and lots more.
As for decorations, we decorate often with the same stuff each year. Gourds and Pumpkins as well. Pumpkin Pie is a really common dessert served during the fall season.Pumpkin Bread and Pumpkin Rolls are also comon.
They're all delicious and my family loves them all.

My Cousin Kelly's family's are one of those included! They all travel from Frankfort to Mount Sterling. We also play games such as Cornhole. The board you can see in this picture is for the game. It is a popularoutdoor game where players toss bean bags
onto a wooden board with a hole.

But to be honest, my favorite holiday to decorate for is Christmas. We have a competition with our neighbor to see who can put up the most decorations!

今日はアメリカの感謝祭でした。この祝日には家族がみんな集まって大勢で夕食を食べる。普段なかなか会えない遠方の親族にも会うことができるんだ。ターキーにハム、マッシュポテト、スタッフィング、マカロニ＆チーズ、おいしい南部料理がたくさん出てくる！

感謝祭の飾り付けには、毎年同じものを飾ることが多いんだ。人形のほか、ひょうたんやかぼちゃも飾る。パンプキン・パイは秋の季節によく出されるデザートで、カボチャの入ったパンやパンプキン・ロールもよく食べてるよ。どれもとってもおいしくて、家族みんな大好きな味です。

いとこのケリーの家族も、フランクフォートからマウント・スターリングまで来てくれました。それからコーンホールなんかのゲームを楽しんだよ。といっても、日本では聞き覚えがないかな？　写真に写っている、「UK」のサインが書いてあるのがゲーム用のボード。穴が開いている部分に豆袋を投げて遊ぶゲームで、この時期には人気なんだよ。

でも正直なところ、僕が一番好きなのは、クリスマスの飾りつけ。毎年近所の人と、どこが一番たくさんデコれるかを競争するんだ！

Oyamazaki Villa is a historic building owned by the Asahi Group. It was originally built as a villa by Shotaro Kaga, a young and wealthy businessman from the Kansai region. The elaborate decorations and magnificent gardens reflect how much he loved this place. Although it was once threatened with demolition, thanks to the efforts of the locals and Asahi Breweries Ltd., it is now open to the public as an art museum.

The current Oyamazaki Villa was completed around 1932. The intricate wall decorations, featuring motifs of bamboo shoots, and a small pond reminiscent of Monet's famous Water Lilies painting are among the building's most admired features. However, my favorite view is from the first-floor staircase lobby, where the candy-colored staircase handrail softly glimmers in the light streaming through the stained glass above.

My heart trembles when I think of the people who used to gather here, back when this villa was still a holiday home—what brought them here, and what they talked about as they leaned against the beautiful, smooth wooden pillars. I can almost see the scene.

The garden surrounding the villa is filled with various seasonal trees and plants, such as cherry trees, water lilies, maples, and ginkgo trees. One of its greatest attractions is that there is always something new to discover, no matter when you visit.

Inside the building, there is a small café with a wide terrace, which was originally the bedroom of the Kaga couple. Visitors can relax here while enjoying a breathtaking view of the junction of three major rivers—the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu Rivers—which is also one of Japan's historically significant battlefields.

In addition, the museum often hosts periodic exhibitions, making it an attractive place where you’ll never get bored.

Last Sunday, I went to Arashiyama in Kyoto. The automun leaves are so beautiful right now.
Arashiyama is very close to Shimamoto, It just a 30-minutes train ride on the Hankyu Line.

It is one of my favourite places,and I hope I can take you guys there one day...
